Tabor House, founded in 1990 by Sister Laura Herold of the Sisters of St. Joseph, consists of two Victorian homes in Hartford that provide a safe, loving home for formerly homeless people with AIDS and HIV. Tabor House is a 501(c)(3). Currently, one house can accommodate 7 men and the other can house 6 men.
At Tabor House residents learn to manage their medical conditions and continue with education or seek employment. A twenty-four-hour, seven-day-a-week staff assists in the smooth running of the residences.
Sister Ann Kane, CSJ, is the third executive director of the Tabor House residences. In addition to Sister Ann, there is a case manager and substance abuse counselor, David Kelly, who works with residents on their recovery efforts through various self-help groups, helps them maintain their health as they keep appointments at local clinics for medical care and medication, scouts out job possibilities, and, when a resident is ready, helps them transition into permament independent living situations.
Tabor House relies heavily on State and Federal grants from the Department of Social Services and from HOPWA - Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS. Even so, it is through the generous donations of benefactors and friends that Tabor House can offer those simple, yet homelike services that make the residences special places to live.
Both residences have recreational activities, TVs and CD players. Residents also enjoy various trips and outings, such as to the movies, theatre, museums, bowling and local recreational facilities. Much of this is through the generous donations of individuals, churches and places such as Hartford Stage and the Wadsworth Atheneum. In addition, many church groups prepare and serve meals to residents at various times throughout the year. There are parties for holidays and picnics throughout the summer, often donated by generous donors.
One significant goal for the Tabor House residents is to integrate into mainline society and move toward independent living in the community. As a man reaches a personal level of independence, he is encouraged to take the significant step out of Tabor House into an apartment or transitional home. "That's a great day", says Sister Ann, "because it means Tabor House has been successful in assisting one resident become self-sufficient and capable of engaging in society again. It's a wonderful feeling when that happens."
